FILA Cadet Pan Am Championships – Women’s Results

The Canadian National Team’s first day of competition at the Fila Cadet Pan American Championships in Managua Nicaragua was a successful one. All four athletes in the female division came home with medals.

Cassandra Leigh (46 kilograms), Alison Sokalski (60 kilograms), and Brittany Johnson (65 kilograms) all claimed silver medals in their weight divisions. Jade Papke (52 kilograms) lost her semi final to the eventual gold medalist from Mexico but came back to win bronze.

Unfortunately the team was shut out of the team standings largely due to the fact that they only had athletes in four of the weight classes. The United States followed by the host country Nicaragua and Peru were the top three teams.

Coach James Messenger was pleased with the performance of the athletes. “The girls did well today. The biggest positive is that these girls are developing as wrestlers. The girls looked more composed and more confident on the mat than they did at their first international tournament a couple of months ago in Turkey. I believe the international experience they are gaining being on this team will help them as they transition to the next stage of their development. Obviously it would have been nice to bring home a few gold medals but it was still a good day.”
